Ghost Tape #10

VNBackpackLSOne of the creepier propaganda campaigns ever conducted by the U.S. military was executed during the Vietnam War by the 6th PSYOP Battalion. Codenamed “Operation Wandering Soul,” it involved the covert broadcast of eerie sounds and distorted voices from helicopters or mobile backpack speaker rigs. The recordings, which often included actual cries for help, were meant to prey on the Vietnamese folk belief that without a proper burial, the ghosts of the dead would wander the jungles and battlefields forever. The worst of them all was Ghost Tape #10. It proved so disturbing to everyone who heard it, on both sides, that “So Moui” or “Numbah 10” became a common slang term meaning “really, really bad.”
